A 25 year old Virgin Islands sipper from A.H. Riise, all peach, apricot, candied orange and vanilla, so heavily sweetened it reads closer to a dessert liqueur than a dry aged rum, soft and gentle at 42%.
Description
A.H. Riise Non Plus Ultra Ambre d'Or Excellence is the top of the brand's lush, dessert-leaning range, a molasses rum from the Virgin Islands carrying a 25 year age statement and rested in ex-bourbon oak. A.H. Riise built its name on rich, fruit-forward, openly sweet rum, and this is that style taken to its peak.
The copy will be honest: this is a sweet rum and pours like one. Expect peach, apricot, honey and candied orange peel over vanilla, thick and syrupy on the palate with a sweet, fruity finish. It is gentler and a touch less over-the-top than the standard Ambre d'Or, but it still drinks more like a fruit liqueur than a classic aged spirit, and anyone chasing a dry, oak-driven pour will find the sweetness in charge. At a soft 42% it is mild and easy, an after-dinner indulgence for the sweet tooth rather than a spirit for serious neat study.
