A sweet, fruit forward black rum from A.H. Riise of the Virgin Islands at 46.1%, with apricot, fig and an After Eight mintiness over young oak and baking spice, richer and rounder than it is dry.
Description
Black Spinel 2024 is an A.H. Riise release out of the Virgin Islands, bottled without an age statement at 46.1%. A.H. Riise blends in the soft, dessert leaning Caribbean style, and this one trades on ripe fruit and sweetness rather than on dry oak or funk, so it sits closer to an after dinner indulgence than a spirit forward sipper.
The aroma opens with apricot, fig and a sweet, jammy fruitiness, while the palate brings young wood, oak and baking spices alongside a distinct minty, chocolate note that several drinkers liken to After Eight. The finish warms with oak, spice and a touch of burn. A.H. Riise rums of this type are commonly sweetened, and the rounded, fruity body reads that way, so it is best taken as a rich, fruity pour rather than a lean one. The higher strength gives it a little more grip than the brand's gentler bottlings.
