A soft, sweet Dominican style sipper of caramel, maple and vanilla with a light fruity touch, aged five years and built gentle at 40%, an easy starter pour that drinks closer to dessert than to a dry rum.
Description
Ron Esclavo Gran Reserva comes from the Dominican Republic, distilled at Alcoholes Finos Dominicanos and bottled by the Danish house 1423. It sits squarely in the soft, sweet Spanish style tradition of the island, where column still spirit and a gentle sweetness do most of the talking. The profile is warm and approachable, caramel, maple syrup and vanilla with a light fruity lift, and it leans sweet rather than dry.
Five years in ex-bourbon oak rounds the edges and adds a thread of milk chocolate and coffee on the finish, but the wood plays a supporting role to the rich, sugary core. At an easy 40% there is no heat or aggression here, which makes it a comfortable introduction for drinkers moving across from cola serves and dessert rums. It is uncomplicated by design and works neatly over ice or alongside something sweet. Those who prefer a drier, more structured cane spirit will find it simple, but as a gentle, mild starter bottle it does its job.
