A Dominican XO finished in an Islay whisky cask by 1423, peat and coastal smoke meeting a soft sweetness, oily and fruity on the palate with a smoky, iodine-tinged finish at 44%.
Description
This Patridom XO is a Dominican molasses rum from the A.F.D. distillery, here given an Islay cask finish by 1423 World Class Spirits, the Danish house better known for its purist S.B.S line. The result is a striking collision of soft Spanish-style ron and smoky Scotch influence, bottled at 44%.
The nose shows the cask immediately, peat, coastal smoke and a spicy, fresh edge over the base rum. The palate is oily and fruity with a clear sweetness, the Islay character layering smoke and a maritime note across the soft Dominican spirit. The finish stays oily and woody with iodine and a lingering sweetness. This is firmly a cask-led bottling, the whisky barrel doing more talking than the rum itself, which will delight peat lovers and divide purists. For drinkers who enjoy a sweet, smoky crossover, it is a genuinely distinctive pour.
