A Coroa makes this Valdeorras white from 100 per cent Godello, one of Galicia’s finest white grapes grown on slate and granite soils. Straw yellow with green glints, it shows green apple, melon and a stony freshness, farmed sustainably.
Description
A Coroa is one of the oldest bodegas in Spain, working in the D.O. Valdeorras in inland Galicia. This is a single varietal Godello, the region's flagship white grape. Valdeorras sits on slate and granite soils that drain freely and reflect heat back into the canopy, while the altitude and the cooling influence of the River Sil give a wide day to night temperature swing. That diurnal range slows ripening and holds natural acidity, which is the source of the wine's freshness. The winery pairs a family holding with a modern, rational cellar approach, fermenting in stainless steel at low temperature to keep the fruit clean and primary. The result is a straw yellow wine with greenish glints. The nose leads with green apple and melon, backed by white peach, pear and a light floral lift. On the palate it is fresh and medium bodied, with citrus peel and a saline, stony note that reflects the granite. The finish is dry and clean. Serve at 9 to 11 degrees in a white wine glass. It suits shellfish, grilled white fish and roast chicken.
