Description
A Coroa works in D.O. Valdeorras, in the mountainous interior of Galicia where the Atlantic reach thins and altitude takes over. This bottling comes from a single old vineyard, one of the winery's best sites, planted with hundred year old Godello vines trained on stepped terraces. The soils are slate and schist, which drain hard and reflect heat back onto the fruit, while the height of the plot lengthens the growing season and holds acidity through ripening. Old vines carry small crops and deep roots, and their concentration shows in the density of the wine. After a gentle press the wine rests on its fine lees, a stage that releases mannoproteins from the spent yeast and rounds the mid palate without hiding the fruit. The colour is a bright straw with green edges. The nose leads with white peach, ripe pear and orchard blossom over a wet stone edge that traces back to the slate. The palate is broad but firmly cut, saline and long, closing on citrus peel and a faint fennel character. Serve at 10 to 12 degrees in a white wine glass.
