Description
This case brings together six bottles of Juan Gil Silver Label, the twelve month Monastrell from D.O. Jumilla in Murcia, Spain, along with six glasses. The wine itself is an organic, single varietal Monastrell, the grape known elsewhere as Mourvedre, grown in the hot, dry uplands of Jumilla on poor limestone soils at altitude. The heat drives full ripeness and the high alcohol the region is known for, here 15.5 percent, while the elevation and cool nights hold a little freshness and lift. Monastrell gives deep colour, dark fruit and firm tannins, and the twelve months in oak round those tannins and add spice and a vanilla edge through slow oxygen exchange. The result is a powerful, fruit driven red. The wine is deep, almost opaque ruby, with a nose of ripe plum, blackberry, cocoa, black pepper and a touch of liquorice. The palate is full bodied and warming, with concentrated dark fruit, ripe tannins and a long, spiced finish. Serve at 17 degrees, with a decant to open it up. A robust match for grilled and barbecued red meat. The bundled glasses make it ready to pour straight away.
