    42 Below Pure Vodka

    700 ml / 40%
    Plain Vodka

    $31

42 Below is a New Zealand vodka made from organic wheat, named for the latitude that runs through the country. Founder Geoff Ross built it to argue that New Zealand’s water and air were as pure as anywhere making vodka. The wheat base gives it a creamy texture and clean, soft character at 40%.

42 Below comes from New Zealand and takes its name from the 42nd parallel south, the latitude associated with the country's clean environment. The idea came to founder Geoff Ross who, as a proud New Zealander, set out to prove his homeland's purity could match any vodka-making nation, and the brand went on to win a string of international competitions before partnering with Bacardi. The base is organic wheat, a grain that lends a creamy, soft mouthfeel, distilled and filtered to a clear spirit at 40% that keeps a gentle body rather than chasing pure neutrality.

The nose is soft, clean and pleasant. The palate is rich and rounded for a vodka, soft and mild with some complexity, and the finish is long. That creamy wheat texture stands up well in a stirred drink, so put it in a Vodka Gimlet: shake it hard with fresh lime juice and a little sugar syrup, fine strain into a chilled coupe, and let the soft body cushion the tart lime into something smooth and bracing.
