4 Monos farm high-altitude Garnacha in the Sierra de Gredos at Cadalso de los Vidrios, in the Vinos de Madrid appellation. This single-site red ages 13 months in French oak and shows red fruit, dried herbs and a peppery, granite-driven freshness.
Description
4 Monos Viticultores is the project of four friends from Madrid working old Garnacha vines in the Sierra de Gredos, in the granite uplands of Cadalso de los Vidrios under the Vinos de Madrid appellation. Gredos has become known for a lighter, more perfumed style of Garnacha, and the reason is the site: decomposed granite soils that drain freely and force the vines deep, plus high altitude that brings sharply cool nights. That wide diurnal range slows ripening and preserves aromatic precision and acidity in a grape that elsewhere turns ripe and broad. This is a single-vineyard bottling that ages 13 months in French oak, used gently to support rather than flavour the wine, with slow oxygen exchange softening the tannin. The colour is bright medium ruby. The nose shows red berries, cherry, dried rose and thyme, with white pepper and a stony, granite edge. The palate is medium bodied despite the alcohol, fresh and lifted, with fine tannin and a savoury, mineral finish. Serve at 15 to 17 degrees, lightly cooled if you prefer. It suits roast poultry and game.
