4 Monos Viticultores make this organic Madrid red from Garnacha, Cariñena, Morenillo and Syrah grown on old vines at 700 to 800 metres. Hand harvested and aged ten months in foudres, it shows cherry, raspberry and a peppery, herbal edge.
Description
4 Monos GR10 comes from the D.O. Vinos de Madrid, made by 4 Monos Viticultores from a blend of Garnacha Tinta, Cariñena, Morenillo and Syrah. The grapes grow on vineyards aged between 30 and 85 years, planted at altitudes of 700 to 800 metres in the hills around Madrid. That elevation brings a wide diurnal swing, with warm days ripening the fruit and cool nights holding back acidity, so the wine keeps freshness despite the southern latitude. The old vines crop modestly, concentrating flavour and giving the blend its savoury depth. Fruit is picked by hand, and the wine spends ten months in foudres, large neutral oak vessels that allow slow oxygen exchange and soften the tannins without adding obvious wood character. Farming is organic and respectful of the land. The colour is a bright cherry red. The nose leads with cherry and raspberry, backed by black pepper, dried herbs and a touch of earth. The palate is medium bodied and structured, with fine tannins and a herb-edged finish. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees, opening the bottle half an hour ahead. It suits roast lamb, grilled beef and mushroom dishes.
