4 Monos revived old vineyards in the Sierra de Gredos, and Cien Lanzas blends Garnacha and Cariñena with a little Garnacha Blanca. Aged in oak, it shows red and black fruit, pepper and a granite freshness.
Description
4 Monos Viticultores grew out of four friends reviving neglected old vineyards in the Sierra de Gredos, in the D.O. Vinos de Madrid. Cien Lanzas blends Garnacha and Cariñena with a small amount of white Garnacha Blanca, grown on the decomposed granite soils that define Gredos. The poor sandy granite drains fast and gives a fresh, mineral and finely structured style of red, while the altitude and the wide swing between hot days and cold nights hold the acidity firm and keep the fruit bright. Farming is biodynamic and organic. The wine is aged fourteen months in oak barrels, where slow oxygen exchange softens the tannins and adds a restrained spice while keeping the fruit and the granite character clear. The colour is a medium ruby. The nose shows red and black berries, cherry and plum, with crushed pepper, dried herbs and a savoury earthiness. The palate is medium bodied and fresh, with fine tannins, lively acidity and a long mineral finish. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees. It suits roast lamb, grilled meats and earthy vegetable dishes.
