4 Monos Viticultores make Aguja del Fraile from high-altitude Garnacha in the Sierra de Gredos, in the Vinos de Madrid DO. Aged fourteen months in French oak, it is a perfumed, fresh red with red fruit, floral lift and a peppery, granitic edge.
Description
4 Monos Viticultores is a group of four growers working to show the potential of the Sierra de Gredos in the Community of Madrid, within the DO Vinos de Madrid. Aguja del Fraile is a single-variety Garnacha Tinta from high-altitude vineyards in this aspiring zone. Altitude and the granite and sandy soils of Gredos are central to its character: the elevation brings cool nights that preserve acidity and aromatic lift, while the poor, free-draining granitic soil yields small, concentrated berries and a fine, stony quality, giving a Garnacha that is perfumed and fresh rather than heavy despite full ripeness. The wine ages fourteen months in French oak, where slow oxygen exchange softens the tannins and adds restrained spice while leaving the floral, red-fruited aromatics intact. The colour is bright medium ruby. The nose shows red berries and cherry over white flowers, black pepper and a granitic, earthy note. The palate is medium bodied and fresh, the tannins fine and the finish savoury and peppery. Serve at 15 to 16 degrees, a light chill suiting its freshness. It suits game birds, poultry and pork.
