4 Kilos makes this Mallorcan red from the island’s indigenous Callet grape. Twelve months in French Allier oak gives an ethereal, pale red of delicate red fruit, citrus and floral lift at a light 12 percent.
Description
4 Kilos was founded in Felanitx by Francesc Grimalt and Sergio Caballero, the name a nod to the four million pesetas of their first investment. This wine is made from Callet, Mallorca's indigenous red variety, with grapes sourced from estates across the south and north of the island. Callet is a pale skinned, naturally light variety that gives delicate colour and modest alcohol, here just 12 percent, suited to the mild Mediterranean climate of dry warm summers and little rain. The wine ages for twelve months in French Allier oak, a tight grained wood that gives gentle, slow oxygen exchange and adds subtle spice and texture without overwhelming such a light bodied wine, while the time in barrel softens the tannins and integrates the fruit. The colour is an ethereal, pale red. The nose is delicate and lifted, with red fruit intertwined with citrus peel, subtle floral notes and a faint earthy edge. The palate is light and elegant, with fresh red berry fruit, fine tannins, bright acidity and a clean, mineral finish. This is a wine of finesse rather than weight. Serve cool at 14 to 15 degrees with lighter dishes.
