Marqués de Cáceres is one of Rioja's defining estates, and this Reserva comes presented as a set of four bottles with four glasses. The wine blends Tempranillo with Graciano and Garnacha grown in Rioja Alta, where the vines sit on clay and limestone soils at altitude. The cool nights and the wide swing between day and night temperatures hold the acidity and keep the red fruit fresh, while the calcareous soils lend structure and a savoury, mineral edge. Tempranillo carries the fruit and backbone, Graciano adds acidity and spice, and Garnacha brings a rounder, riper note. The blend is matured twenty months in French oak barrels, the Reserva ageing that softens the tannins through slow oxygen exchange and adds vanilla, sweet spice and the leather and tobacco notes that develop with time in wood. The 2020 vintage gives a balanced, classic style. The colour is medium ruby with a garnet edge. The nose shows red cherry, plum and dried red fruit over vanilla, leather and tobacco. The palate is medium to full bodied, with fine, integrated tannins, fresh acidity and a long, savoury finish. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees. It suits roast lamb and red meats.
