Description
This Gran Reserva carries the Kirk and Sweeney name and is drawn from the long established Bermudez distillery, one of the Dominican Republic's historic three B's. A column still molasses rum given a 20 year statement and matured in ex-bourbon wood, it is bottled at a soft 40% in the rounded, approachable Spanish style.
The nose mixes brown sugar, wood and oak with a touch of alcohol, and the palate is sweet and gently spicy with a little sharpness, finishing velvety, bittersweet and lightly bitter. There is a clear sweetness here, though some drinkers find it a touch drier and oakier than the softest Latin rums, which lends a little structure. Smooth and undemanding, it makes an easy neat pour or rocks sipper for those who enjoy soft, sweet rums, and serves as a gentle introduction to the country's older bottlings.
