Description
1583 Albarino de Fefinanes is a white from D.O. Rias Baixas, made by Palacio de Fefinanes in Cambados, a house that has produced wine since 1928. It is a single variety Albarino grown on granitic sandy loam soils in the Salnes Valley, the cool, damp heart of Rias Baixas near the Atlantic. The maritime climate and poor granite soils give bright acidity and a stony, saline character, while a harvest in the first week of October captures ripe but fresh fruit. What sets this bottling apart is the winemaking. The must is fermented in Bordeaux oak barrels, then the wine rests for four months in barrel and two months in stainless steel, so barrel fermentation and lees contact add texture and a subtle creamy weight without heavy oak flavour. Expect a pale straw colour with green tints and a nose of green apple, white peach and citrus peel with a floral lift. The palate is dry and fresh, medium bodied, with orchard and stone fruit, a fine texture and a long, saline finish. Serve well chilled at 9 to 11 degrees.
