12 Lunas Blanco is a Somontano white from El Grillo y la Luna, blending Chardonnay with aromatic Gewürztraminer. Grown on calcareous and gravel soils in the Pyrenean foothills, it is a perfumed, ripe white of white peach, apricot and rose.
Description
12 Lunas Blanco comes from El Grillo y la Luna, a family project set up in Barbastro in 2007 within the D.O. Somontano, in the foothills of the Aragonese Pyrenees. It blends Chardonnay for body with Gewürztraminer for perfume and spice. The estate farms 48 hectares of its own vineyards across several sites between 300 and 400 metres, on a mix of calcareous, alluvial gravel and loam soils. This altitude matters: warm days ripen the fruit fully, giving the wine its 14 percent alcohol and generous stone fruit, while cool mountain nights and the wide diurnal range lock in acidity and preserve the delicate floral aromatics that Gewürztraminer is prone to lose in the heat. The wine is made in a fresh, young style to keep that aromatic drive to the fore. The colour is bright pale yellow. The nose is expressive and perfumed, with ripe white peach and apricot, rose petal and melon, lifted by a hint of ginger spice from the Gewürztraminer. The palate is full and ripe, rounded but carried by fresh acidity into a clean finish. Serve at 9 to 11 degrees. Its perfume and gentle spice make it a good match for mildly spiced dishes and roast poultry.
