Description
Frangelico is a hazelnut liqueur from Piedmont, built on roasted Tonda Gentile delle Langhe hazelnuts, the prized local variety, steeped alongside cocoa, vanilla and berries. Its rounded, monk shaped bottle with a knotted cord at the waist nods to the legend of the hermit friars said to have first distilled hazelnut liqueurs in the region. It is bottled at a gentle 20%.
Roasted hazelnut, vanilla and cocoa fill the nose, the palate creamy and sweet with toasted nut and gentle chocolate. Behind the bar it is a dessert and nutty body ingredient: it sweetens and adds roasted depth to a Nutty Irishman or a hazelnut White Russian, gives an Espresso Martini a praline edge, and pours neat over ice or over vanilla ice cream. A useful back bar bridge between the coffee and dessert ends of a menu.
