Sweetish and warming, juniper meeting citrus, rosemary and cinnamon with a curl of fennel and star anise. Distilled high on the slopes of the Pichincha volcano above Quito, it folds in Andean coca leaf for a gin that tastes of its altitude. A long, spiced finish.
Description
Cruzloma is named for a place on the eastern flank of the Pichincha volcano above Quito, where the Andes balance the hot equatorial winds into cool daytime breezes and where the battle that secured Ecuador's independence was fought in 1822. Urkanqa Destilíería distils this handcrafted London Dry in small batches at altitude, building an unusual botanical bill that reaches for local character with rosemary, fennel, star anise and Andean coca leaf alongside the classics.
The nose is fruity, with juniper and a spicy undertone. The palate runs sweetish and warm, juniper and citrus joined by rosemary and cinnamon with fennel and star anise lending an aniseed lift, and the finish lasts long and spiced. Serve it in a G&T with a sprig of rosemary, or let its spice carry a Negroni.
