Woody, earthy and unusually wild, with spruce tips, dandelion root and even tree fungus giving this gin a forest-floor depth few others attempt. Distilled in Lüdenscheid with soft Sauerland spring water and mostly local botanicals, it carries citrus and herbs over its resinous backbone. A gin that genuinely tastes of where it comes from.
Description
Sauerland Distillers work out of Lüdenscheid, on the wooded north-western edge of the Sauerland, and Woodland is their love letter to that landscape. The botanical bill leans hard on the local and the unexpected: spruce tips, dandelion root, nettle, sorrel and tree fungus alongside the more familiar juniper, orris, angelica, coriander and mandarin zest. Soft spring water from the region carries it all, lending the gin its mildness and clarity.
The nose is light and herbal with a citrus lift. The palate is where the forest arrives, resinous spruce, earthy dandelion root, the green tang of nettle and sorrel, all wrapped around a firm juniper core at 45.3%. The finish runs long and savoury. Drink it neat to read the detail, or build a tonic and garnish with a sprig of rosemary.
