Saint James Elegance (260th Anniversary)

Saint James Elegance 260th Anniversary is a long-aged Martinique vieux from Saint James, distilling since 1765 and one of the island's largest and most historic houses. Distilled from fresh-pressed sugar-cane juice under the island's rum AOC and matured in ex-bourbon oak, at twenty-two years it sits well beyond the six-year XO threshold, and tropical ageing makes that age count.

The nose is mature and refined, with dried fruit, leather and clove over a light frame. The palate brings tobacco, toasted oak and a roasted depth with a touch of sweetness, and the finish stays woody and fresh, drying gently. This is the elegant, silky-textured side of old agricole, drier and more spice-led than a sweet molasses rum of similar age, though its lightness means it bows out fairly quickly. Bottled unsweetened at 43.5% for the distillery's 260th anniversary, it is a graceful after-dinner sipper that rewards an unhurried glass.
