A featherweight Tahitian cane juice rhum that drinks more like a sweet treat than an agricole, all candied fruit, vanilla and bubblegum with a marzipan and burnt sugar finish, soft and undemanding at 40%.
Description
Ariki Black is a cane juice rhum out of Tahiti, an unusual origin that sits well outside the French AOC islands, bottled at an easygoing 40%. Where most agricole leads with grassy snap and dry vegetal cane, this one heads somewhere far more playful, leaning into candy, ripe orchard fruit and sweet vanilla rather than structure or funk.
Though billed as a pot still rhum from fresh pressed sugar cane, the character on offer is closer to fruit schnapps and confectionery than to a classic Martinique blanc, with bubblegum, candied fruit and a touch of menthol over a syrupy body. The finish turns toward marzipan, burnt sugar and light wood. It is best read as a soft, fruity curiosity for relaxed sipping or a fruit forward cocktail, rather than a dry, terroir driven cane juice rum for purists.
