A dry Marie-Galante agricole from Bielle, bottled by Old Brothers at 47.9% off a Savalle still, fresh sugarcane and marzipan giving way to grapefruit, herbs and a gently bitter, tannic oak finish with a citrus snap of lime and kumquat.
Description
Bielle is a Marie-Galante distillery known for cane-variety experiments and brisk, high-character agricole, and Old Brothers is a French independent with a sharp eye for cask selection. This MGB comes off a Savalle still, a versatile multi-column design that keeps the cane nose clean while leaving a dry, medium body, and reaches the glass at 47.9% from fresh sugar-cane juice.
The nose mixes fresh sugarcane with marzipan, grapes and a green vegetal lift. The palate is firmly dry, sugarcane and herbal notes over a hot, lively core, while a touch of bourbon-leaning oak adds gentle tannin and a faint bitterness. The finish snaps back to citrus, lime and kumquat closing things out. This is a characterful, properly dry Marie-Galante pour, the cane freshness still clearly in charge despite the wood, suited to drinkers who like their agricole green and bracing.
