An 18 year old Hampden HJF from 2002, balancing classic ester funk with ripe tropical fruit, pastry and minty freshness, a single cask bottled by Old Brothers at an intense but drinkable 53.6%.
Description
Hampden of Trelawny is the high-ester benchmark, a 100% pot still house whose marques run from clean OWH up to the towering DOK. This single cask from the 2002 vintage, marque HJF, was selected by the French bottler Old Brothers for its Nectar releases, catching the distillery at a stage where age and funk meet in balance.
Distilled on the double-retort pot still from molasses and matured in ex-bourbon casks, it is bottled unsweetened at 53.6%. The nose brings pineapple, banana, solvents and varnish, the palate adds ripe tropical fruit, pastry and spice, and the finish stays peppery and fruity with a minty, menthol freshness. At eighteen years the wood and pastry notes give the classic ester blast somewhere to land, and the moderate strength keeps it intense yet accessible. A mature, well-rounded Hampden that delivers funk without sacrificing drinkability.
