A whisky cask finished Panamanian rum from a 2006 vintage, marrying medium sweet caramel, vanilla and mango with peat smoke, iodine and a chilli warmth, a smoky crossover at 46% that drinks well neat or with cola.
Description
Macnair's Exploration Rum 2006 takes a Panamanian column still molasses rum from a 2006 vintage and finishes it in peated whisky casks, an unusual crossover that sets it apart from the soft, vanilla led Panama norm. Bottled at 46%, it pairs the region's sweeter character with a layer of smoke borrowed from Scotland.
The rum side brings medium sweet caramel, vanilla, chocolate and ripe mango, while the whisky cask adds smoke, iodine and a chilli warmth that runs through the palate and into a spicy, smoky finish. The two halves meet rather than fight, giving a smoky twist that stays approachable. It suits anyone curious about peat who is not ready to commit to a heavy Islay malt, and it drinks happily neat or stretched with cola. The finish is on the shorter side and the spirit fairly young, but it offers honest value and a genuine point of difference.
