Saint James VO – Rhum Vieux Agricole

Saint James, one of Martinique's oldest and largest houses, distilling since 1765, offers this VO as its entry into aged agricole. At three years it clears the AOC Vieux tier, an aged cane juice rum from the estate's column still, bottled unsweetened at 42% and pitched as an affordable workhorse.

The nose is sweet and fruity with light wood and vanilla, the palate woody and lightly peppery with a mineral edge, the finish carrying spice, fruit and vanilla. Ex bourbon ageing softens the young spirit while the cane character stays honest and clear, the profile straightforward rather than deep. It does its job well neat as an everyday pour, and shines in a vieux Ti Punch where its cane, wood and vanilla have room to work without demanding much from the drinker.
