Description

Chatel's Caramel au Beurre is an arrangé from Reunion, taking a cane-juice rum and infusing it heavily toward salted-butter caramel. Reunion makes cane-juice and molasses rums alike, and here the base is a vehicle for the flavouring rather than the star.

Butterscotch, caramel and vanilla dominate nose and palate, exactly as the name promises, with a sweet, confectionery character throughout. At 40% it is soft and rounded, clearly a sweet flavoured rum rather than a dry sipper, and honesty is due: it reads as a dessert pour and is best treated as one. A medicinal note and a slightly bitter edge surface on the finish, with the alcohol not fully integrated, so it lands as a straightforwardly sweet caramel arrangé for those who enjoy that style chilled or over ice.
