A single cask Panamanian from 2002, seventeen years in ex-bourbon oak at a fuller 51.2%, where orange peel, dried dates and honeyed fruit meet spicy oak and a milk chocolate finish.
Description
Malecon Rare Proof 2002 is a Panamanian single cask carrying real strength, drawn from molasses spirit distilled on a column still in the soft, vanilla and spice house style for which Panama is a major source. The Rare Proof line trades the usual gentle 40% for something closer to full proof, bottled at 51.2% from one barrel after seventeen years in ex-bourbon oak.
That extra strength does useful work, giving the sweetness a frame to push against. The nose is bright with orange and orange peel over fruit and spice, the palate sweet and honeyed with dried fruit, and the finish layers milk chocolate, dried dates and overripe orange. It reads as a richer, spicier, dried fruit driven take on the smooth Spanish style, with sweetness present but better balanced by the higher proof. A logical next step for drinkers who like sweet ron but want more grip and dark fruit depth.
