A nine year Hampden single cask from Velier, this is an intense, dry and woody fruity sipper of pineapple, brown sugar, menthol, cocoa and light smoke, an unsweetened cask strength Jamaican at a serious 60.3%.
Description
Hampden of Trelawny is the reference for high ester Jamaican funk, and Velier remains the most prestigious name in collectible rum, known for tropically aged, additive free single casks. This Endemic Birds release takes an LFCH marque to nine years and bottles it unsweetened at 60.3%.
Distilled from molasses on the double retort pot still and matured in ex-bourbon oak, this cask leans drier and woodier than the juiciest Hampden. The aroma is tropical fruit, vanilla, solvents and brown sugar, the palate turns light, dry, fruity and bitter, and the finish brings fresh, roasted, dark chocolate and bitter notes. There is pineapple, brown sugar, menthol, cocoa and light smoke, with the alcohol nicely integrated once it has rested. This is a dry, woody fruity Hampden for drinkers who enjoy the marque and do not need the sweetest, juiciest profile, best given time in the glass.
