Bacardi Coconut Rum

Bacardi Coconut is a flavoured white rum from the world's largest rum brand, a coconut seasoned spirit bottled at a low 32%. The reduced strength and the coconut flavouring make clear that this is a mixer first and foremost, designed for sweet, easy summer drinks rather than for sipping.

The nose smells of coconut and pineapple with a slight toasty note, while the palate is sweet and a little thick with coconut up front and tropical fruit, plus a green, limey, mineral edge underneath. It tastes of coconut layered onto a very neutral white rum, exactly as the bottle's made for mixing message suggests. As a neat pour it is thin and one dimensional, and it is not built for that. Where it works is in a quick tropical highball or a frozen cocktail, lending sweet coconut without much fuss. Judged on those terms it functions perfectly well.
