Saint James VSOP

Saint James dates to 1765 and is among the largest agricole houses on Martinique, and this VSOP is a true AOC rhum agricole, distilled on a creole column from fresh sugarcane juice at low strength to keep the cane character intact. The AOC forbids added sugar, so it is dry by rule, and aged at least four years in ex-bourbon oak it carries the protected VSOP mention legitimately.

Fresh cane juice gives the grassy, vegetal core, and tropical ageing layers wood and spice over it without the sweetness of a molasses rum. The nose shows sugarcane and vanilla with a light smoke and young oak, while the palate turns woody and lightly smoky, carrying nutmeg, dark chocolate and dried fruit into a spicy, tobacco-edged finish. At 43% it is approachable and well priced, a genuinely useful way to learn whether the dry, woody cane-juice style appeals, neat or in a stirred drink.
