A softer 17 year Caroni from 1993, reduced to a gentle 44.4%, with the tar and rubber markers wrapped in vanilla, hazelnut, milk chocolate and butterscotch, an unusually approachable entry to the style.
Description
Velier, the Genoese house that brought Caroni to the world, bottled this 1993 blended Caroni at a reduced 44.4%, a softer reading of the Trinidad distillery that closed around 2003. Unlike the full-proof bruisers in the range, this release is pitched for drinkability, an easier way into the most mythologised name in rum.
Distilled from molasses and matured in ex-bourbon oak, the dilution tames the usual intensity: the classic tar and rubber sit in the background while vanilla, woody warmth, roasted notes and a thread of tar lead the palate, finishing on butterscotch and milk chocolate with hazelnut richness. Round and gently sweet, it almost reads like a Spanish-style rum at times, very smooth and forgiving for newcomers. A tame, charming Caroni that lets curious drinkers taste the distillery's markers without the full workshop assault.
