An unsweetened Trois Rivieres that drinks more whisky-like than grassy, with wood, light smoke and a touch of cane over a dry, spicy, warming finish at 43%, happiest in mixed drinks.
Description
Trois Rivieres Double Wood comes from the Martinique estate whose roots reach back to 1660, with rum-making for more than a century, now distilled at the La Mauny site from fresh sugarcane juice. This is a no-age-statement, unsweetened expression whose double-cask treatment steers it toward a wood-and-smoke character rather than the bright, vegetal blanc most people expect from the house.
The profile leans surprisingly whisky-like: woody and lightly smoky on the nose, with the agricole cane note arriving second rather than leading. The palate carries oak, smoke and spice with only a touch of cane sweetness, finishing dry, spicy and warm. Honest about itself, this is a more rustic, polarising agricole that trades grassy finesse for a smoky edge. It earns its place in cocktails and long drinks, where the wood and smoke give backbone, more readily than as a neat sipper.
