Velier Caroni Heavy Rum (Paul Ullrich) HTR 2000

Caroni, closed in 2003 and rescued from its abandoned bond by Velier, remains the most mythologised name in rum. This heavy Trinidad single cask from the 2000 vintage was bottled by Velier for Paul Ullrich, aged 15 years and presented at a monstrous 70.3% cask strength, the kind of full proof that built Caroni's reputation.

Distilled from molasses and matured in ex-bourbon oak, it doubles down on the industrial signature, with massive tar, rubber and workshop notes over caramel, dried fruit, tropical fruit and woodsmoke. A vein of sweetness and ripe fruit keeps the heaviness gripping rather than punishing. The strength is enormous, so this is best in small neat pours or with a few drops of water, ideally shared. A bottle for seasoned enthusiasts only, oily and dense, rewarding focused attention with one of the heaviest expressions of the style.
