Off the Diamond Coffey still, this tropically aged 1993 Demerara from Velier leans into ripe mango and papaya over vanilla and dark molasses, a fruit-forward column rum bottled unsweetened at a forceful 61.4%.
Description
A single cask Diamond 1993 from Velier, the Genoa house that built its reputation on full-proof, additive-free Guyanese rum drawn from the heritage stills at the Diamond distillery. This one comes off the metal Coffey column rather than the wooden pot stills, the lighter and cleaner end of the Demerara spectrum, then spent its years maturing in the Guyanese heat where oak and tropical fruit concentrate quickly.
Bottled at cask strength from ex-bourbon wood, it pushes the column-still profile into unusually dense territory: mango, papaya and vanilla up front, molasses and dark prune underneath, with barrel, milk chocolate, anise and a dry tea note carrying the long finish. At 61.4% it drinks hot and rewards a few drops of water, which opens the tropical fruit further. A coherent, concentrated old Diamond aimed at drinkers already comfortable with high-proof Demerara.
