A young Clarendon distillery bottling at 40%, five years old with a light, banana-and-honey nose over fruity pastry, gentle sweetness and soft caramel wood, an easygoing and approachable everyday Jamaican that leans smooth rather than funky.
Description
Clarendon Classic Gold comes straight from Clarendon, the Clarendon parish distillery running both pot and column stills, a five-year-old aged in ex-bourbon and reduced to a soft 40%. This is the workhorse house in approachable mode, leaning on the lighter, smoother side of its output rather than the funkier pot still marks.
Distilled from molasses, it noses light with banana, honey and a spice lift, then offers fruity pastry notes, a gentle sweetness and soft wood on the palate, the finish carrying spice, brown sugar and light fruit. Mostly caramel-led and pale gold in the glass, it is light on character but clean and inoffensive, pleasant on the rocks and likely a tidy mixer. Unsweetened despite its mellow feel, it sits at the accessible, everyday end of Jamaican rum rather than the intense ester end, a fair-value, undemanding pour for drinkers who want a smooth young Jamaican without committing to full funk.
