An eight-year-old Panama ron from Malecon, drawn from the country’s big bulk source and aged in ex-bourbon oak, with plum, cherry and caramel over a woody, lightly sweet column-still frame at 40%.
Description
Malecon 8 Years Gran Reserva is a Panamanian ron in the soft, vanilla-spice idiom that defines the country's output, where much of the spirit traces back to large bulk producers and is matured for export. This eight-year-old sits at the entry end of the range, an everyday Spanish-style pour rather than a showpiece.
Distilled on a column still from molasses and aged in ex-bourbon barrels, its flavour leans on the cask and a touch of sweetness rather than the clean base spirit. The nose carries honey, floral notes and a whiff of alcohol, the palate turns woody with plum, cherry and caramel, and a short nutty, oaky finish rounds it off. Some find a faint plum-brandy sharpness, so it tends to shine best lightly chilled or stirred into a simple mixed drink rather than studied neat.
