Breiz’île Collection Mangue Ananas

Breiz'ile is a Brittany based outfit working with sugarcane juice rum, and this Collection Mangue Ananas is an arrange, a macerated fruit rhum rather than a dry agricole. The base spirit is column distilled from cane juice, but the character here comes from the steeped mango and pineapple, which dominate the aromatics with a ripe, vanilla edged tropical sweetness.

Where the nose promises pure dessert, the palate is more interesting, with grapefruit and lemon peel bringing a sour citrus lift that keeps it from cloying, before a dried apricot note rounds out the finish. At 28% it is mild and easy, openly sweet from the fruit maceration and best understood as a fruity sipper or a base for a long drink rather than a serious sipping rhum. Those who like their rum bright, juicy and forgiving will get on with it; purists after grassy agricole snap should look elsewhere in the range.
