A 1991 vintage agricole from the small Neisson family distillery on Martinique, drawn from a single cask, decades of tropical ageing turning fresh cane juice into leather, vanilla and toffee with a woody, earthy depth at 45%.
Description
Neisson is a small family run distillery in the north of Martinique, founded in 1931 and long a favourite for cane juice rhum made the AOC way, from fresh pressed vesou with no added sugar. The Armada line gathers its oldest stocks, and this 1991 vintage is a single cask expression carrying many years of tropical maturation, the kind of age that in Caribbean heat reads far older than the same span would in Europe.
Decades in oak have pulled the grassy cane core deep into mature territory, the nose offering wood, vanilla, cinnamon and leather, the palate woody and earthy with more leather and vanilla underneath. The finish turns to toffee, soft spice and a touch of chocolate, rounded and composed rather than sharp. Bottled at 45% and unsweetened in the agricole tradition, it shows what long tropical ageing does to a spirit that began as fresh sugarcane juice, a slow, savoury rum for unhurried drinking.
