Saint James has made Martinique agricole since 1765 and ranks among the largest houses on the island, instantly recognisable by its squared bottle. This 1982 vintage is a long-aged release distilled from fresh-pressed sugar-cane juice on a column still, bottled unsweetened at 43%, the kind of old agricole that earns the French word rancio for its complex, savoury maturity.

Decades in oak have pulled the spirit far from its grassy youth into something dark and layered. The nose offers candied fruit, cherry and orange peel over woody depth, the palate brings coffee, dried fruit and cherry, and the finish stays round and oily with dried apricot. Some tasters find the wood pushes toward bitterness at the very end, the trade-off of serious age, but the overall impression is of a piece of Martinique history, dry and spice-forward rather than sweet, best given time in the glass to unfold.
