A Martinique vieux from fresh cane juice, twelve years in ex-bourbon oak and bottled unsweetened at 42%, balancing red fruit, caramel and bourbon-cask vanilla against tobacco, dry wood and a thread of fresh sugarcane.
Description
Trois Rivières traces its estate back to 1660, with more than a century of rum behind the name, and this twelve year carafe edition is the distillery in mature, relaxed form. It is distilled from fresh-pressed sugar cane juice, not molasses, and carries no added sugar, so the sweetness here is purely the work of long oak ageing.
Twelve years in ex-bourbon casks under tropical conditions has drawn deep vanilla, chocolate and caramel from the wood, set against red fruits, earthy tobacco and the sugarcane that anchors every agricole. The palate is suave and lightly dry, fruit and spice held in balance by well-judged oak, with tobacco and cane lingering on the finish. At an easy 42% it asks nothing of the drinker, a characterful everyday vieux that gives plenty for the money.
