A 1950 vintage Martinique agricole from J. Bally bottled at 45%, still fresh and grassy beneath caramel and varnish, the palate carrying grape, prune and cinnamon on into a fruity, tannic, spice-laced finish.
Description
J. Bally Plantation Lajus du Carbet 1950 is a historic vintage agricole from J. Bally, the Martinique estate with roots to 1660 whose mid-century millesimes are prized by collectors. Distilled from fresh-pressed sugar-cane juice and aged for decades, a 1950 vintage is a rare survivor and a genuine taste of post-war Martinique.
Even after long maturation the grassy agricole core remains, framed by caramel and a varnish note that comes with great age. The palate carries fresh grass, grape, prune and cinnamon, the cane character threading through mature oak, leather and pear, and the finish brings cinnamon, tannins and orchard fruit. The extended time in cask has tamed the agricole snap considerably, hinting at active barrels and a long sleep. Bottled unsweetened at 45%, it stays gentle in strength while reaching deep into vintage territory. A contemplative pour and a piece of distilling history for those drawn to very old French-island rum.
