A Jamaican rum under the Coruba label from J. Wray & Nephew, light and unusually rounded with pear, plum and citrus over a dry, grassy frame, gentle but a touch flat at 40%.
Description
Coruba N.P.U. is a Jamaican rum bottled at 40% under the Coruba name by J. Wray & Nephew, presented unsweetened in a notably soft, light register for the island. It sidesteps the heavy ester funk many associate with Jamaica in favour of a gentler, fruitier profile.
The nose is light and watery in the best sense, fruity with plum and overripe pear but largely without esters, carrying a roundness unusual for Jamaican rum and a note of dry grass. The palate echoes it, citrus and fruit with pear and plum, though it can read a little thin and diluted, while the finish turns slightly bitter with light wood and a touch of caramel. It is an easy, undemanding pour that shows a softer side of Jamaica, pleasant enough but short on development, suiting casual drinking or a simple mix more than close study.
