A light 15 year Panamanian from Malecon, column distilled and ex-bourbon aged at 40% with gentle oak, spice and a touch of fruit, leaning drier and softer than its siblings and happiest as an easy mixer.
Description
This Reserva Superior is one of Malecon's younger long aged Panamanian bottlings, a column still molasses rum carrying a 15 year statement and matured in ex-bourbon wood at a gentle 40%. It works in the soft Spanish style the country is known for, here on the lighter, more restrained side of the range.
The nose mixes caramel, oak and green apple with a slightly sour edge, and the palate is spicy and lightly sweet with a touch of smoke and that same sour note, finishing on citrus, leather and a rounded but somewhat diluted character. It comes across as light and easy rather than deep, with the nose often more expressive than the relatively short palate. Pleasant and undemanding, it sits comfortably as a soft everyday pour, and many will find it most rewarding in simple mixed drinks rather than slow neat sipping.
