A cask-strength 2009 vintage from Karukera in Guadeloupe, distilled from fresh sugar cane juice and bottled at a full 60.3%, a vegetal agricole built for those who want intensity without added sugar.
Description
Karukera was relaunched in 2002 and is known for single-cane bottlings from Guadeloupe, working entirely from fresh-pressed sugar cane juice. This 2009 vintage carries the L'Intense name and arrives at cask strength, 60.3%, with no sweetening, placing it firmly in the dry, terroir-led agricole camp.
Guadeloupe falls under the looser IGP rather than the Martinique AOC, but the cane-juice character is the same family. At this strength expect a powerful spirit that typically shows a grassy, vegetal core with citrus, white pepper and measured sweetness from the oak. A drop of water opens it; this is a sipper for agricole drinkers who like things bold and bone dry.
