Saint James Cuvée L‘Essentiel

Saint James has been distilling in Martinique since 1765 and is among the island's largest houses, instantly known by its squared bottle. This Cuvee L'Essentiel is a twelve year agricole, a blend of older vintages made from fresh pressed sugar cane juice under the AOC and bottled unsweetened at a measured 43%.

Aged in small ex-bourbon casks, it leans into the dry, woody side of mature agricole, with dried fruit, roasted nuts, dark chocolate and warm cinnamon over a toasted oak with a cherry edge, while the grassy cane core keeps it from feeling heavy. The extra surface area of small barrels has drawn out finesse and spice without tipping into harshness, finishing nutty, cocoa rich and dry. At 43% it is built for slow, contemplative sipping rather than impact, an elegant aged Martinique rum for drinkers who already appreciate the house style and want something a touch more refined.
