A 1970 vintage J. Bally from Martinique, an old-era agricole bottled at 45%, trading youthful grass for dried fruit, honeyed cane, nougat and fine wood with floral spice, an elegant and increasingly rare slow sipper.
Description
J. Bally is a storied Martinique name, and this is a 1970 millesime, an agricole from a different era of the island's production, distilled from fresh-pressed sugar cane juice with no added sugar and bottled at 45%. Rums like this are no longer made in this form, which is much of their appeal.
Long ageing has carried it far from the fresh-cane snap of youth into something soft and layered, with dried fruit, honeyed cane, nougat and fine old wood over gentle spice and floral notes. The palate is elegant and balanced rather than powerful, the finish warm with caramel, raisin and spice, all carried easily at 45%. This is a vintage classic for experienced drinkers who want a nostalgic, slow-sipping agricole with the patina of age, a rare and increasingly sought treat rather than an everyday pour.
