A single-cask Martinique agricole from Trois Rivieres, a 2003 vintage aged nine years in ex-bourbon, deep and mature with chocolate on the nose and dried fruit on the palate, drawn at cask strength and bottled dry at 51.5 percent.
Description
Trois Rivieres traces its estate to 1660, and this is a 2003 single cask, aged nine years in ex-bourbon and made from fresh-pressed sugar cane juice. As an aged AOC Martinique agricole drawn from one barrel, it represents the more serious, contemplative end of the cane-juice spectrum rather than a fresh blanc.
Tropical ageing has given the spirit depth beyond its nine years: chocolate leads on the nose, while the palate settles into rich dried fruit, the grassy cane core long since folded into oak and time. Bottled at cask strength of 51.5 percent and unsweetened, it keeps the dry, spice-leaning character that sets aged agricole apart from sweet molasses rum. A single-cask bottling for unhurried neat sipping, where the chocolate and dried-fruit maturity reward attention and a drop of water helps it unfold.
