A fifteen year Martinique vieux from J.M, matured in ex-bourbon and bottled dry at 41.9%, unusually nutty and cocoa-leaning over a cane and vanilla base, with anise, nougat and candied fruit through a barrel-spiced finish.
Description
J.M has distilled at the far north of Martinique since 1845, drawing on the rich volcanic terroir at the foot of Mont Pelée. This 2000 vintage is an aged agricole from fresh cane juice, fifteen years in ex-bourbon casks, and it carries the AOC promise of no added sugar.
Tropical maturation does a lot of work in fifteen years, and the result leans into nutty, woody and cocoa-driven territory more than most agricole. The nose opens with vanilla, cane and nutmeg, even a faint petrol note some drinkers enjoy, before a palate of spice, apple, licorice and nougat. The finish brings cocoa, candied fruit and gentle barrel oak. At a relaxed 41.9% it sips elegantly and unhurried, a refined, dry vieux that rewards anyone curious about a darker, more chocolatey side of cane juice rum.
