Revolte Revolte Rum

Revolte is a one year old rum from the German distillery of the same name, a young molasses spirit rested briefly in ex-bourbon wood and bottled at 41.5%. It lives up to its name with an unruly, characterful style that owes as much to the world of fruit brandy as to classic Caribbean rum.

The nose is fruity and edgy, full of esters with a schnapps-like, stone-fruit fragrance that signals its German roots. The palate softens the impression, drier and milder than the aroma suggests, with a faint smokiness, some sweetness and vegetal notes, and the finish carries tropical and dried fruit over treacle. This is an offbeat, young rum that drinkers compare to white agricole in the way it takes acclimatising to. Tasters suggest meeting it first rather than chasing a richer pour, since its raw, fruit-forward snap can wrongfoot a palate. For the adventurous it is an honest, distinctive young spirit.
